In the ramshackle of numbers we call a character sheet there is usually a place for skills. Skills are usually learned or honed abilities or knowledges. A bootlegger might have some really good driving skills. A mediator will have something like diplomacy. Of course, they are virtually worthless without the gamemaster (GM) presenting a challenge. […]

Back to Batman: Arkham Origins, the Firefly fight is horrible enough to merit calling out individually. Almost everything I complained about previously is present in one fight, which is kind of impressive in terms of developer mistakes. This fight is the one each game feels the need to have where you do not use your […]

The Strategy Group got together last Friday night for our first run at Civilization V. We managed to browbeat Potshot into upgrading to the Gods and Kings and Brave New World expansions, which I understand was cheaper than trying to just get Gods and Kings, which was our target content.  That gave us religion as […]

While you could play most of forever using the base set of Dominion, it now has a lot of expansions. The first of them is an expandalone, which contains a second set of the base cards so you could play without the base set or play 5- to 6-player games. (They now sell the base […]

As the design of a game, this timetable makes perfect sense. No problem, the enemy will spawn, disappear within fifteen minutes, and respawn again on schedule […]

Kickstarter has been a game changer, pretty literally. As I've written in a series of articles over on Shoost (http://shoost.co/2014/02/27/how-kickstarter-has-affected-game-development-part-1/), crowdfunders are taking the place of publishers for game projects, and what the consequences of that are. But, precisely what are backers getting out of a project? That's a surprisingly deep question. Let's take a look at what people think they are getting when they back a project.

Asynchronous PvP creates the unusual possibility of having something called “PvP” that never brings you into direct conflict with another player, where everyone playing wins, and the computer takes the losses on behalf of the players. Reward-seeking players will often create nigh-asynchronous PvP situations. Given the chance to pick the fight, most people pick fights […]

Let's face it. MMOs are dead. We've waited for over a decade for a worthy game to realize our dreams of hacking the Gibson with our VR goggles and gloves, and nothing has appeared. So, I'm calling it: MMOs are over and done. There's no purpose for this blog anymore, I guess. But, I still like writing. So, time to write about my second favorite genre: Match 3 games! Let's dive into some discussion about what makes an interesting match 3 game. Oh, and do make sure to check out my site at http://psychochild.org/ to see the new site redesign!
