Re: The "healer" role as a byproduct of the meta-game we played
There's a time and a place for everything.
Some games, simply by their design, require a group to have a healer of at least some ability. The problem is, this is a trend that is becoming cannon of MMORPG's - its getting to the point where game developers wouldn't even consider creating a fantasy MMORPG without a healer class.
There are so many other paths to take. Below I have an alternative idea...
The raid has formed, we had just reached the final boss Big’r Thanntheresst. We had three tanks, two being large and very powerful, but lightly armoured ogres, and the other being a dwarf in heavy armour. We made sure the tanks were the only ones to attack the Big’r Thanntheresst’s offspring in the previous rooms which has made her pretty mad, at the tanks especially.
Then, we had six Vampires, which can have a fairly high dps output, tend to be pretty weak, but their vampiric attacks allow them to gain health from each hit they inflict.
The druids created life links between the tanks and the vampires. These life links meant that any hit taken by the tanks would have the damage distributed between the tank hit, and the six vampires. So rather than the tank being hit with 70 points of damage, the tank would be hit with 10 points of damage and so would each of the vampires.
Personally, I'm not sure how I'd deal with healing. I guess I'd tackle it differently depending on the game.
