Nice commentary, but not always entirely accurate. :)
WoW does indeed have linked mobs. They are a bit more rare, but there are quite a few places where, regardless of distance, you cannot single pull. This is much more common in instances, of course, but it's also present in world encounters. In the latter case, it's usually a named mob with some friends, but it is also true of some regular mobs. Your point is correct that in the general case, there's no linkage, though.
WoW also has plenty of fetch quests that are unrelated to breadcrumbing, and that can indeed feel like fairly pointless time-wasters. They are much, much more common on the Alliance side of the game than on the Horde side, though.
