The link between the first line and the rest is that lately I've been wearing my business hat more than my design hat. From a business POV, investing manhours into content and systems that you will later write off because new content and systems either replace them or make them irrelevant is inefficient. The "character progression" oriented RPG design framework seems to inherently create this kind of inefficiency, putting the developer on a treadmill as much as it does the player.

The word you're looking for is "exclusive".
