It hails back to Jessica Mulligan's harangue: they consider MMORPGs to be products, rather than services. You don't see sequels to services; you see them to products. Products get finished, packed, shipped, and gone; services are around until they're discontinued.
There's no easy fix; games have traditionally been products. For some reason, the advent of the persistent online game hasn't made enough people shift paradigms.
