They say it's a very complex saga and the beginning can be baffling (starts in medias res, gives no explanation about what's going on and shifts the point of view as much Martin does, if not more). They suggest to either start from the second, or endure through the first and move to the second trying not to judge prematurely. The more attention you invest in the books, the more the saga pays up later, as it develops.
It's the reader that has to rebuild the world in his mind. Erikson shuffles around the pieces of a puzzle, plenty of misdirection. So you have to then pay attention and put the piece together.
The first book is also much older then the others and Erikson's style and storytelling improves greatly.
