I'm midway through Mielville's "Perdido Street Station" and am thoroughly enjoying it. The romance between Isaac and Lin immediately brought to mind Philip Jose Farmer's Hugo-winning story, "The Lovers", which was (I think) the first story published -- in 1953! -- about sex with an alien (who was also insectoid).
PJF doesn't get enough recognition these days :) I was thrilled to see that homage in Perdido.
I read the first two or three, I can't remember, of Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series, but the "Torture is a form of sacrament" tone really turned me off, much like John Norman's "Women like rape" themes in his Gor books just seem to pander to distasteful thoughts. Authors should be free to write what they like, but I am also free not to read them.
Good luck on your journey into Goodkind's mind.
(Long time reader, and really enjoy reading your reviews of the modern fantastic!)
