the first engine that fell was from the "future" that donnie sent back through time, if he hadn't sent the engine from the end back then that would have been the anomaly, two of the exact same jet engines in the same place/universe. frank had to save donnie from the first one in order for donnie to be alive and send the second one back through time, fixing the anomaly.
