I liked this book a lot. I agree with your analysis of its flaws, but feel the need to mention one more. Lack of action. Like you say, there's a huge battle, then 500 pages of buildup, then another massive conflict. Getting through the book was hard for me because it seemed like nothing was ever happening. Then when book 2 changed continents/characters I lost all interest in the series.
