I thoroughly enjoyed Wizard's First Rule and its immediate sequels. The way Goodkind treats magic as something of a force with its own identity and very specific rules is unique among the fantasy novels I've read -- the main character doesn't just muddle his way through everything perfectly by virtue of his being the main character. That definitely had an appeal for my inner engineer.
I also like the minor characters introduced in some of the books. I found the new foci of attention refreshing and remained interested in the series mainly because of them. There's only so much any author can do with two protagonists.
The Sword of Truth series is pretty good overall, but it gets tediously preachy toward the end. Speaking of the end, I hated it. I wish I had never read the last twenty-odd pages of the final book.
The cover art by Keith Parkinson is great all the way along.
