The problem with the last 2 books (the one taking the longest) is that they had alrady been written, almost 7 years ago. But the book was too big, so he decided to cut it in half. Instead of cutting it by the middle, he re-wrote everything from the bottom up, that one with the characters in the north, the next one in the south.
And in his words, it was a bitch. I can see why... Create a huge world, with lots of plots working together as in a dance of sorts. I find it genius, and well worth the wait.
Martin gave me some of the best reading moments of my life (and yes, I own erikson, tolkien, abercrombie (or whatever the name) etc).
