As to how relevant Xfires data is, I would not count it out for "trends".
As we saw with EvE, run a special, and of course people WILL play, and Xfire can reflect this.
Note how Guild Wars is in the top 10, and has been for over a year. This game still garners customers and players still log in. It is the second largest selling RPG with MMO features as well right behind WoW (it has been noted having sold 6 million boxes)
Also, if you take the most notable MMO's and line them up according to their listing on Xfire, you can see that it matches well for how popular those titles are in the real world.

1. WoW
2. WAR
3. LOTRO
4. Lineage 2

etc....

(and not counting "free" games)

So, maybe it is relevant?
