victory requires a game that can end
Your site is fascinating. You are so very right about so many things. There is only one thing that i think you consistently overlook. Nobody likes to lose. Most people will not pay a monthly fee for a game that makes them feel defeated. That is the simple reason why pvp, no matter how you slice it, will never be a big success.
I see only two possibilities. If the game is unwinnable, then it must always feel meaningless and unrewarding. If the game is winnable, then the victors will enjoy it tremendously, but everyone else will soon leave.
Solving this problem requires more than just 'doing pvp right' As i have learned from you, it is but a symptom of an even deeper flaw. It results from an unrealistic idea. The idea that a game could continue indefinitely without ever coming to an end. Why not create a game that can be restarted whenever one faction becomes clearly dominant? After checkmate, one resets the board, one doesn't attempt to continue playing.
