Maybe FFXI was all sweetness and light until the idiot NA players showed up, but I suspect that you're going to find asshats out there of every nationality.
Most of my FFXI-playing friends and I here in the States were of the impression that FFXI had some kind of synchronization system to level the playing field between players with disparate ping times (US vs Japan). My friends who got their share of phat lewt from NM drops weren't beaten to the draw that often by East Asian players. I myself found that I could compete for spawns such as Ghelsba logging points on an even basis with Chinese and Japanese players.
