The NM problem is certainly

The NM problem is certainly not the only thing that pulled the JP and NA community apart, if even a factor in it. Sure, NAs complained about it but I didn't see any in-game abusive comments or actions towards the other players. Some of the higher level NMs there is a problem and also on some of the more overcamped enemies as well. I camped Hoo Mjuu, a semi-popular spawn, and claimed it my fair share of times. I think it's only at high levels when HNM LS (guilds) want to camp, the NA feel very annoyed and there has been reports I have seen of active in-game complaints over such things. However, that's end-game stuff and hardly explains the reaction from Japanese throughout the whole game.

In the time I played FFXI, the opposition between the two parties was always explained because of the differences between our cultures. The biggest problem is the language barrier. In FFXI you can't exactly group up with anyone and they automatically know what to do without having to tell them. You need to know what to pull, what the skillchain is, and such things as that. The translation system is alright and for when it's lacking players have figured out ways to talk to the other language, but honestly, it's boring to play with someone you can't talk to, no matter how good they are. FFXI's battle system is incredibly repetitious and if you don't have people to sit there and talk with, it gets boring fast.

I partied with a few Japanese before. When they end groups they end them regardless of whether or not you need 200XP to ding or not. They also seem much more willing to group with their own. We had a Japanese Ranger in one of my parties and he said he had to go because of work or something and we checked him a little bit later and found that he was off in another leveling zone. Honestly, I just don't think it's fun to play with other cultures in FFXI. It could be done in an MMO, but not in FFXI. It just doesn't work. FFXI is incredibly social and how much fun you have in FFXI is strictly determined by how many friends you have and how social you are. If you can't talk to someone and be friends with them, you aren't going to play with them in FFXI. Simply put. It doesn't work.
