VANGUARD: SAGA OF HEROES FINDS A NEW HOME
- Sigil Games Online and Sony Online Entertainment In Talks To Co-Publish Sigil’s Ground-Breaking New Game -

May 5, 2006 – Carlsbad & San Diego, CA – Sigil Games Online and Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a global leader in the online games industry, today announced that Sigil is working with Microsoft Game Studios on an arrangement to acquire the rights to its highly anticipated massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. These efforts have resulted in a tentative agreement for Vanguard to be co-published by both Sigil Games Online and SOE. All three companies will be showing the game at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) as they work closely together for a successful transition. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is scheduled to launch this winter.

“As the development process is ongoing and constantly shifting, it became clear that MGS and Sigil had varying visions and direction for the title’s development,” said Brad McQuaid, CEO of Sigil Games Online. “In the best interest of Vanguard, it was decided that we would buy back the publishing rights from Microsoft.”

As co-publisher of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Sigil assumes greater control of marketing and PR, while maintaining responsibility for game development, community relations, media relations, customer support, and quality assurance. Under the terms of the agreement, SOE will provide distribution, marketing, hosting and back-end support -- including billing and technical support -- for the game. Additionally, SOE is tentatively planning on adding Vanguard, upon its release,to SOE’s Station Access™ subscription plan. Station Access allows players to enjoy all of SOE’s MMO titles for one low monthly price.

“We are very excited to be working with so many old friends at Sigil,” said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. “Vanguard looks beautiful and has an incredibly rich game world. It’s the type of game that will appeal directly to SOE’s hundreds of thousands of players and should fit in perfectly with the current line-up of games available in Station Access.”

”This decision was made mutually by Sigil and Microsoft, in the best interest of the long-term goals for the title,” said Phil Spencer, General Manager at Microsoft Game Studios. “As a key Windows development partner, we will continue to work with Sigil to ensure Vanguard’s ongoing success.”

First guess: Vanguard is nowhere ready and Miscrosoft decided to bail. I wouldn't be surprised if this will lead to a one-year delay.

Second guess: It makes absolutely no sense for SOE to keep three identic games competing between each other. Two were already too much. This could lead to two scenarios. The first is that Vanguard will never release and the development reabsorbed into EQ2, the second is that it will release but it will fail so loudly that it will be shutdown shortly after.

But then I know that SOE never does anything logic. They bought and still support Matrix after all. They are really mimicking NCSoft's portfolio strategy and absorbing all potential competitors. Even if they suck.

Instead there's one thing I'm pretty sure: right now Microsoft is regretting to have dumped Mythica in favor of Vanguard, if someone remembers what I mean.

And one thing is ABSOLUTELY sure: Vanguard will be delayed indefinitely.

Smed: I have to say I'm incredibly impressed with Vanguard. The game is awesome, and I think from our perspective it's going to be something we're very proud to be associated with.

This will be pasted again in bold when the game will be released. If it will be released.

Re: wtf?!

Vanguard isn't ready and Microsoft wasn't seeing an end to the suffering.

It's a moneypit and Sigil is 'teh doomed'.

Re: wtf?!

All I know is that a game I was planning on buying I will not now.

Re: wtf?!

Heh, nearly 1400 replies in the relevant thread on the Vanguard forum.

Well, if nothing else, that certainly ramped up the excitement and frenzy surrounding the title right before E3 :s

Here's the nostalgic vision :)

No seriously. I spent (now) 3 hours reading every single post of McQuaid, Grande and Smedley.
I know they are as honest as Nixon and I am pretty sure the real deal is Microsoft said:
"Gimme something playable soon or I'll bail."
So Brad, who couldn't give anything playable even if he wanted too, raised some money (and this is where's the thing gets interesting. Who gave him this new fresh lots of money?), bought back his share from MS (which gladly sold out their ticket to hell) talked to Smed about granting him marketing and publish, and here we are.

And Smed, he is an evil genius. Given that he strongly believe in the portfolio idea (and Garriott believes it too. Scary), can you blame him for getting a game like Vanguard on board?

I agree with you tho. The game won't be out for a looong time more. Next Winter? Yeah, sure.

Re: wtf?!

Witness the begining of the end of a good (or promising) online game Ladies and Gents.

Granted Sigil is "Teh suxxors" but they had a plan, err at least they did when my boy Poe was there. Microsoft was an evil tyrant, but from what I gather, they gave them free reins to make a quality game.

I wish I knew the whole story why Poe, his wife and alot of other good talent left Sigil. I'd give 4 American dollars to anyone that can fill me in on the Who, What, Where, Why thing on that event.

Im guessing that this whole News about SOE publishing Vanguard has something to do with it.

I know if I worked for Sigil and I seen SOE goons walking around, I'd have a memory card in my tube copying my stuff while I packed my RL personal effects into boxes.

Re: wtf?!

Sigil have had four years to get a good game together. So far, they have 1999-era EQ with less content and laggy, Poser-esque graphics.

I'm guessing the talent left when they saw Ego McQuaid steadfastingly driving Vanguard down the route named 'Suck', and Microsoft followed suit this week (massive speculation: after giving Sigil a "Either we sell it back to you or you're all fired and we take over" ultimatum).

Re: wtf?!

Damn shame, too. I had high hopes going based on the "sekret sauce" bait. Having MS as publisher wasn't bad publicity either. We all looked forward to it based on knowing that at least MS was technology-oriented.

Now some real news comes in and it's not looking good. Rumors of beta players who clamoured to get in, are no longer even interested in playing. Numbers such as 4k invited and less then 100 online with screenshots to prove it, doesn't sound good. Beta leaks from www.fohguild.com subscribers citing severe game flaws and suggestions of lying about how far the game has come. One has to wonder if this game is ever coming out. Then you'd have to wonder if you'd even want to play it if it did. Based on the leaks that beta players won't even play, it begs the question, what the hell were you doing for 5 years, Brad?

I think he spends far too much time doing damage control and building a following based on his visions, when he should be locked in his room programming and developing.

Brad's niche seems to be in discussing his vision, not materializing it. He should be writing a book for all the commentary he engages in because his game isn't showing off what he writes about, that's for sure. He also gets mad when people point out the procrastinator in his ego-centric personality.

He also seems rather obsessed with self-labelled professional, hardcore gamers. Such that you see on www.fohguild.com. He's had a relationship with these guys for quite some time. Objectively, this crowd is good at what they play, but biased and unapproachable. Truth be known, I've had the pleasure of gaming with varied expertises, from newbs to FoH quality. All agree that the mentality of FoH loudmouths is anything but mature and is NOT the pre-requisite of a good gaming strategist. Talk to any member of the original FoH guild who left due to Furor's disparaging, uncalled for and excessive, demeanor back in the day and they'll tell you the same as they told me. Furor, now under a pseudo-alias, is good, but still a jerk. Yet McQuaid seems to be attracted to the unapproachable strategist as opposed to the rational, mild-mannered person with the same expertise. In a word, the guys from FoH compared to the guys at Flagship (ex-WoW developers) are night and day in both expertise and demeanor. The FoH crowd would also sell McQuaid out without thinking twice and I think that's evident already based on what's been done to his reputation there so far, especially these past few months.

It's all about bad choices, bad influences and bad habits that gives us the bad vibes now materializing on this game.

Re: wtf?!

Microsoft were convinced they knew how to make an MMO after AC1, so they made AC2. A clean slate so they could fix their mistakes. Only to prove they knew less than they did when they made AC1. Brad is very vocal about ensuring that things don't happen to his games that would make them less Visionary (i.e. more marketable, i.e. dumbed down).

All of Brad's "SoE screwed my vision" rhetoric was at total odds with his association with Microsoft.

The first signs that Brad was leaving Microsoft came when they announced they were shifting from the Microsoft beta service (where Microsoft do lots of customer satisfaction analysis and steering group stuff that would drive Brad nuts but very soundly steer the game towards WoWishness) to Fileplanet.

I think SoE will be keen to see V:SoH reach the shelves. It's a net for them to catch yet-another niche audience - disgruntled WoW RPers... And a lot of SoE guys are actually believers in the vision. EQ1 needed to be a flagship for their MMO product line tho, and not one called "Titanic" :)

Re: wtf?!

Where did my paragraph go?

Point of the first paragraph is - to put it crudely - I think Microsoft wanted to walk the Path of Sony, basically let Bard build another of his great worlds, and then watch him impose his Vision with an iron fist while detailling everything that would "ruin" the game in great detail. It was often Brad's arguments against something that eventually compelled SoE it was the right thing to do ("No you whiners, its a world, it SHOULD take you an hour to cross it. Maybe if you stayed put in one place you wouldn't find it such a burden. So no, you can't have teleporting!")
